First draft – completely unedited
I’d been so determined that I’d never see Alec again. I’d driven myself away with my self-hatred, and I knew he was better off without me. Although he looked so small laying there, a younger version of me, neat and tidy, no tattoos on his arms, and clean shaven. We had remained opposites even though five years had passed since we last met, that I was pleased. Alec deserved his world to be a good one.
His eyes were closed. He was pale and still in the hospital bed, stitches on his temple, white sheets tucked around him, with various monitoring devices beeping rhythmically. There was the familiar smell of antiseptic that reminded me too much of things I want to forget, and his notes hung on the end of his bed. Even though I knew he was no longer the fourteen-year-old kid who said he hated me, it shocked me how much he looked like the young man of nineteen he was.
“I’ll leave you with him.” Leo backed out of the room and shut the door behind him. Then there was nothing else I could do apart from making myself known, and hoping that Alec wouldn’t ask me to leave.
“Alec?”
His eyes flickered open, and he blinked at me as if he needed to focus. Then he instantly moved to sit, swaying and cursing. I reached to help him, but he shoved at my hands, which I’d been expecting. Then he hit me with both barrels.
“What the fuck are you doing here?”
