“He forgot to turn off his background insulin,” Mark interrupted sharp enough to cut through my panic. “He played his game, and his sugar levels went dangerously low,” Mark explained in that annoying way experts did.
“Dangerous,” my stomach swooped, and I rounded on Chloe who’d just walked out of our son’s room. “Where were you? Why didn’t you check he’d turned it all down, why didn’t you remind him?”
She’d been crying, I could see that—I knew her crying face because I’d caused it enough times, and it hit me that she didn’t need me shouting at her, and I pulled her into a quick hug. Fuck. My son is in that room. And I wasn’t there for him.
“He’s so independent,” she said into my neck.
I forgot every talk I’d had with him in that instant, every mention of how he wanted his independence, because that was my son, and I was losing my shit. “You’re his mom! He’s just a kid. He’s fourteen!”
Chloe pulled herself away from me. “You weren’t here!” Chloe cried as she pulled away. “You told me he didn’t want me asking him questions, or reminding him, and I thought just once I’d try not to worry. I’m a good mom! I told him this morning he needed to be careful and remember.” She shoved at me. “I’m a good mom.”
I crumpled, Of course, she was. She was the best mom. Why in god’s name was I shouting at her?
I offered a hand to her, held her as she gripped my shirt. “Sorry. Sorry.” I murmured. “This isn’t on you. I was just so scared and…”
