I’d always wanted a brother or sister for Ryker, but Casey and I were never going to work, and Ryker was our only kid, but he had sisters when she remarried and they were close. I could imagine him at their weddings, at graduations, just being there for them whenever they needed him.
I wanted siblings for Lottie as much as Ten did, I’d just never realized it before he talked about it, and I was determined to push things forward. Unfortunately, sitting at my laptop ready to write an email to Dauphin County Children and Youth Services was an exercise in staring at a blank screen after a few aborted starts. I guess it didn’t help that my first email started with a sentence that pretty much came over as ‘we’re gay, we’re married, deal with it’—probably not the best angle of attack—with attack being the operative word.
The second email didn’t mention Ten and I as a couple, and the marriage was implied and apologetic. For fucks sake!
I deleted that straight away.
So, it’s all about happy balance, and this was something I didn’t appear to be able to find.
A knock pulled me out of my strangled thought process, and after I called for whoever was there to come in, the door opening made me shut my laptop. What Ten and I were doing as a couple outside of being Railers was our business. I had far too many nosy people hovering in my office that would easily put two and two together just from my facial expression, which according to Ten was transparent, although I think he had the best inside track to my brain of anyone.
