Then I was back at my desk, staring at the photo of Ten and Lottie, and suddenly I knew what to write to the Children and Youth Services, but before I sent it, I needed Ten to hear what I’d written. I knew he was in cool down after practice and I found him chatting to Adler about mice, or cats, or mice as big as cats, but when I caught his eye he was immediately sober.
“What’s wrong? Is it Lottie?”
“No, but can we talk?”
He frowned, because he knew me so well, and this needing to talk sounded serious, but he followed me back to the office and shut the door to give us privacy.
“What’s wrong?” he asked.
“Nothing, I mean, everything. No, look…” fuck, not a good way to start. “I was trying to write this email to children and youth services, okay?”
His shoulders dropped where they’d been hunched up in worry, and his expression relaxed as well. “Okay?”
“And I had all these fancy words, and I was getting defensive, expecting them to read it and dismiss us out of hand, but then Tanner was in here and…” it wasn’t my place to reveal what Tanner had said, and I knew Ten would understand. “Let’s just say it gave me perspective.”
“Okay, now I’m confused,” Ten took a chair and leaned forward, “are you saying you’re having second thoughts?” he kept his expression even, but I knew him too well and I could see the question held a lot of weight.
“No, god no, I want it more than even before. I want Lottie to have a sibling. Look it’s easier if I read what I wrote, okay? Then you can tell me if you think I’m shooting and missing the net or something.”
Ten shuffled in his chair and gave me his best serious face, brushing back his bangs so he could give me his full attention. “Go for it.”
