Unedited excerpt – coming March.
“So, you talked about my daughter with others before coming to me?”
Huh? That was so irrational. “You just said that you hadn’t heard this from her previous teachers.” He stared at me blankly, and I reined in my confusion. “It seemed like the best way to—”
“So why have none of the other teachers reached out?” he accused, his words slurring, and I went from thinking he was irrational to being suspicious he might be drunk. Where was the guy who talked about pizza and pineapple with such passion?
“I’m the only one that believes there is an issue,” I began, but stopped when he stood and began to pace the classroom.
“And there you go,” his tone was dead. “I don’t pay thousands to this damn place for you jump to conclusions.”
I was at a disadvantage staying in my chair, so I stood and held out a hand to stop him pacing. I didn’t mean to touch him, but he sure as hell walked into my hand and then flinched and stumbled back only to catch himself and then pull himself to his full height which was a good six inches over mine.
I’m not intimidated. On the other hand, do I need to call security? Is he high? Is he drunk?
“Mr. Horner, I think we’re talking at cross purposes, I’m not jumping to conclusions, and I care deeply about the success or failure of my students—”
“She’s not a failure,” he snapped.
