The swarm buzzed around the first bend heading into the short straight and it was clear I’d made up at least three spaces in just those quick seconds from the start. There was no time to celebrate, no time to waste, and I shut down the racing line for the rest of the field behind me. The rush was nothing like winning, but it was definitely up there.
“Red flag. Red flag.” Ed’s voice echoed in my ear at the exact time I passed a waved red, and I immediately pulled off the throttle enough to sit at 80kph which was slowing to the speed of a snail, my heart sinking. Fuck. Red flag meant a safety car to slow the field because of debris on the track, so we’d all bunch up. Was it too much to ask for to have a clean start for all of us? Red flag meant it would close me up to the front runners, but I’d also have Neumann and Augusto back on my tail. Fuck. Fuck.
“Copy. Delta.” I still wanted to know what was happening. “Who crashed?” First corners were notorious for accidents, everyone jostling for position, taking chances, or maybe someone was slow off the line, or too fast, either way often you were lucky to make it out unscathed. If the race had been red flagged then it had to be serious. I glanced in my mirrors, still couldn’t see Augusto, and no sign of Neumann.
“Waiting on information.” Ed confirmed. “Protect your tires.” There was a subtle change in Ed’s tone that sent an icy shiver of fear down my spine.
“Who crashed out? Talk to me, Ed?”
