I held her gently as she leaned against me, easing away when her new baby let out a tiny squawk. She blinked back into the room, slipped her son off her breast, and rubbed his back, seemingly satisfied he would be okay, then wrapped a blanket around him and offered him to me to hold. She done everything so carefully, as if it took every part of her focus to care for her newborn. I hesitated — how could she trust me with such a tiny scrap?
“This is Bean?” I asked, stunned at how perfect he was with his dark eyes and thick black hair so like Augusto’s. “He’s so small.”
“Meet your godson,” she murmured.
“I’m not sure I should hold him. Surely he’s too small?” Shouldn’t he be in a special crib, where were the people supposed to help here? “I should get someone—”
