“I thought you’d want to know that everyone has gone.” The manager kept his tone compassionate and respectful, despite the fact that my fiancé and I had broken up with a spectacular fight in the atrium of his hotel, in front of other guests. Twice he’d politely asked us to move the conversation elsewhere, and both times Lennox and I had ignored him because Lennox had a lot to say to me, and I was too shocked to stop him.
I winced, “I really am very sorry for what happened. I didn’t mean to be part of all that chaos.”
Brian shrugged, “it was your fiance doing most of the shouting, so there’s no need for an apology I don’t think that The Retreat has seen that much excitement since one of our guests fell through the ceiling of the Lancaster room.”
“Someone fell through the ceiling? That wasn’t in the wedding brochure,” I was trying to make a joke, but at first I didn’t think it worked, as Brian stared at me and raised a single eyebrow. Then his lips curved in a smile — a very nice smile, filled with compassion.
“Maybe you never got to page ten,” he deadpanned.
