I don’t know where to start with this post – after all, I will listen to Christmas songs at any time of the year!
I think I like Christmas music because it often includes the things I like the most; sentimental lyrics, choirs, sweeping music that builds throughout, passion, social messages, and most of all each one reminds me of Christmas in every note. I was going to put the songs in order, but GAH, it’s impossible! All I do know is that I have a favorite and so I will mention this first so it’s very clear! LOL.
I Believe in Father Christmas – Greg Lake
This is my absolute favorite Christmas song. I love the crescendo, the words, his vocals, in fact, everything about it! (You can find it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkweTyrRTKw)
Then, in no particular order…
- A Spaceman Came Travelling – Chris DeBurgh
- Happy Christmas (War is over) – Lennon
- The Power of Love – Frankie Goes to Hollywood
- Christmas Lights – Coldplay
- Do They Know It’s Christmas – Band Aid
- One More Sleep – Leona Lewis
- Hallelujah – Alexandra Burke version
- 2 becomes 1 – Spice Girls
- Stop the Cavalry – Jona Lewie
- All I Want for Christmas Is You – Mariah Carey
- White Christmas – Bing Crosby
- Fairytale of New York – The Pogues
- Mary’s Boy Child – Boney M
- A Winters Tale – David Essex
- Stay Another Day – East 17
- Babe – Take That

Michael says
Christmas in Killarney by Bing Crosby
It’s upbeat and fun 🙂
Claudia says
I love ‘Fairytale of New York’ by The Pogues. They give so much punch to that song… And then, it has to be Bowie and Crosby singing together ‘The Little Drummer Boy’. I somehow find really endearing the mix of such different styles ♥

Laurie Ciriello says
I love The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire). The first time I remember hearing it was Greg Evigan performing it on BJ and the Bear. I had such a crush on him as a kid. I even wanted to be a truck driver at one point, lol.

Jenny Saul-Avila says
My favorite is “Christmas” by Blues Traveler. I listen to it repeatedly this time of year. I love how the idea is just a wish for everyone to be happy, no matter what their religion is. “If it’s Hanukkah, or Kwanza, Solstice or December 25th, peace on Earth to everyone and everyone you’re with.”
Caryn B says
Christmas music as a genre is my favorite. For a ‘favorite song’, I can only narrow it down as far as three. One seems to be extremely common; Little Drummer Boy / Peace on Earth as a duet with Bing Crosby and David Bowie. Everything about that is just perfection; the combination of the traditional and the contemporary in multiple ways, the combination of vocal stylings… just everything. The second is Oh Holy Night, which has been covered by just about everyone in the world. If I have to pick a favorite version, it has to be Celine Dion’s brilliantly done take on this song that just stirs every part of what I adore about this beautiful song that is both tender carol and seasonal anthem. I’m not religious, but this version can make me believe in true gifts from a higher power. And finally, if you love to have a little fun with your Christmas music, check out Straight No Chaser’s The 12 Days of Christmas. If you’ve never heard of or seen SNC, do yourself a favor and YouTube that one… it’s just the best!
ButtonsMom2003 says
My husband and I saw SNC in concert for the first time last month. They did The 12 Days of Christmas and it was wonderful – as was the whole concert.

Linda A. says
I don’t listen to music much anymore, but growing up, it was probably Little Drummer Boy. Probably the version on the record we had, and the drums.
Daniela says
I’m not really a fan of Christmas music. In spanish, most carols are religious, and if not they’re translations of selected english songs. And even then, be it translated or the original, it’s an endless loop of the same 10 selected songs by different people from September to near january, and incredibly exhausting.
Mark says
Still like grandma getting run over by a reindeer. Still waiting for someone to record a version with daddy kissing Santa Claus.
Didi says
All I Want for Christmas is You.

I love many Christmas songs but if I had to choose one it would be little Drummer Boy. It is partly the sentiment, partly hte pace of the song.
Give me Tennessee Ernie Ford singing so many different Christmas songs.
Amy Pittel says
The Power of Love by Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Firstly, because … Frankie Goes to Hollywood! Secondly, because it’s so exquisitely unlike any other Christmas song that I don’t think I realized it was one!
Leah says
It’s hard to narrow down to just one. I love all the sad ones. But I guess the one I would stop and listen to in the mall would be ‘Grown-Up Christmas List’ by Any Grant. The lyrics make me cry sometimes. I love her whole Christmas album. I can and do listen to it on repeat (even in the summer).
I also love all the old carol/hymns from many years singing them in church when I was a girl. My favorite is ‘Angels We Have heard On High’. A close second is ‘What Child Is This’.

Carol of the Bells as sung by a choir.

I have two favourites, the first is Do You Hear What I Hear? I have always loved this song. I remember singing at our elementary school Christmas concert.
And a more recent, but actually pretty traditional song is Come and I Will Sing You, which is very similar to the Twelve Days of Christmas. Only i find it so much prettier, and this is sung by my favourite band, Great Big Sea.

I love all the old Burl Ives Christmas songs from the old movies and although not “strictly” a Christmas song, Dolly Parton’s “Hard Candy Christmas”is one i love – its a little bit country so when you look into it, the words are sad, but there’s a touch of hope in there as well.
