What does writing GLBTQ literature mean to me?

RJ Scott/ Uncategorized

When I began to consider this question I was a little unsure of how to get to a proper answer.

What it means to my family is that I am happy in what I am doing for a career.
What it means to my friends is that I am happy in what I am doing for a career.
What it means to me is that FINALLY I am happy in what I am doing for a career.
Writing is something I have done all my life and I love it. It's just me.
Of course that makes no sense at all… I don't think it explains the motivation I have to write in this particular genre. So I thought back to WHY I write Gay Romantic Fiction specifically.
If any of you read my blog from way back you will remember a post I made about Bromance. I can't even find it now… rofl…
My first ever bromance (although I didn't realise it at the time) was a toss up between Battle Of The Planets and Famous Five (yes I know Dick and Julian were brothers). Then, still without realising, I moved on to various bromances up to where I first began writing, which was fan fiction for Battlestar Galactica (the original series), then of course onto the Jared/Jensen SPN stories.
What I like about bromances is what I want to write the most in my MM writing. The unselfish sacrifice, the strong men, the love that defies a label, the happy ever after. It makes me so mad when people imply that a gay man isn't allowed, or isn't capable of having, a happy ever after, or a romance, or even to experience an unselfish sacrifice made on their behalf.
So I guess what writing GLBTQ literature means to me is that it is in my heart to want to offer an escape from what people tell you that you can or can't have … if that makes sense…

I love that you write strong characters with spirit and over-abundance of love. I have not found a single character that I did not fall in love with.

Battle of the Planets? pfft please! You need to watch G-Force or Gatchaman…..

Battle of the Planets started out as "Science Ninja Team Gatchaman" and was all about a 5 member superhero team. The Americans got hold of it and called it G-Force and then by the time we got it over here they renamed it Battle of the Planets.

I'd also like to point out that it was all based on earth and because so much was censored by the americans they had to fill the extra time with that annoying robot 7-Zark-7.

I have the first season of Gatchaman if you want to watch it?

What your writing GLBTQ literature means to me is a plethora of great stories to entertain filled with characters that I can relate to. Growing up and only hearing about straight stories and trying to find some kind of idea as to what was going on in my ever crazy head was difficult. There wasn't that much available. And now there are stories out there that make me feel like I'm not alone. So thank you for writing GLBTQ literature! Especially such great ones!

By the way, while I love your Texas series bookcovers, it is all the good reviews I have read about your writing which has put them on my to-read list. I got a bit embarrassed yesterday thinking that I might have implied it was solely the covers that drew me. Sorry! (g)

Thanks a bunch for your post! I've had people tell me that bromances aren't real and don't really exist. I always ask why and 9 times out of 10 it's something along the lines of, oh, men don't do that. I must admit, I'm a bit snarky at times so I'll ask them how they know that. Have you asked all these guys you meet whether they have bromances? Do all guys just not have good friends? And since you don't think men are capable of having bromances, does that mean men in general can't have any type of close relationship with anyone, male or female? You should see the looks I get. I've yet to meet a guy who can answer that. The best was when I asked a guy that in front of his gf. The look on his face when she glared at him… So yes, bromances are real and important and yes, men are capable of them. Alright, rant over. Thanks for sharing RJ! And sorry for the rant.

Brandon Shire, for his entry, asked us to write what reading LGBT meant to us! For me, there is such a broad range of characters than sometimes exist in hetero lit, which is odd since I've met a range of people in real life! I have an opinion on that, but it is not applicable to this hop so I won't share it here, but the more I've read, the more characters I have fallen for, cheered for, cried for, and think about well after the book is done. I love it when a book makes me feel so much!
RJ, you are one of my favorite authors, and pretty much all of your books bring out so much emotion in me! Thanks for being part of the hop, I've really enjoyed reading about my fave authors and their reasons behind the writing!
