“Oh wow! This is such a brilliant start to a new series! This atmospheric murder mystery is a huge departure from anything else I’ve read by RJ Scott and it’s a wonderfully eerie, slow burn suspense.”
“This storyline had everything that I love in a suspense tale; mystery, drama, hidden town secrets, a possible murder or murderers, lies, conspiracy and two men who are caught in the middle— thrown together by chance but seem to be the anchor that each other needs.”
“Bones, an unsolved mystery, corruption, abuse, and small-town secrets make ‘What Lies Beneath’ a fast paced and “on the edge of your seat” mystery/thriller.”
What Lies Beneath
In the hottest summer on record, Iron Lake reservoir is emptying, revealing secrets that were intended to stay hidden beneath the water. The tragic story of a missing man is a media sensation, and abruptly the writer and the cop falling in love is just a postscript to horrors neither could have imagined.
Best Selling Horror writer Chris Lassiter struggles for inspiration and he’s close to never writing again. His life has become an endless loop of nothing but empty pages, personal appearances, and a marketing machine that is systematically destroying his muse. In a desperate attempt to force Chris to complete unfinished manuscripts his agent buys a remote cabin. All Chris has to do is hide away and write, but he’s lost his muse, and not even he can make stories appear from thin air.
Sawyer Wiseman left town for Chicago, chasing the excitement and potential of being a big city cop, rising the ranks, and making his mark. A case gone horribly wrong draws him back to Lancaster Falls. Working for the tiny police department in the town he’d been running from, digging into cold cases and police corruption, he spends his day's healing, and his nights hoping the nightmares of his last case leave him alone.

I’ve read the entire series. I think they were the first books I read of yours. I’m rereading Blade again because I wanted something sweet and gentle. It’s a lovely book.

No I haven’t read the books yet. The covers are nice with how the pictures overlay the background. It looks slightly spooky and definitely mysterious.

As coincidences go, I started with book 1 almost two weeks ago. Then sadly we had to let go our much loved 16 year old tomcat, and after this, I couldn‘t concentrate enough to read in english, if at all. Your newsletter reminded me to try reading again, so hopefully now I will understand, and most of all remember, what I just read!

I’ve read the series and I like the elements of romance, grief and suspense. In regards to the covers I’d have to say that while I like them I do feel that adding a photo of the character at times cheapens the effect. Having just the water or the fog be the cover is always perfect to me.
Ilona says
Haven’t read it yet but I will admit to only buying it because the cover intrigued me 😀
Susan McCann says

Oh, I love a good murder mystery. All the suspense, danger and, dare I say, romance… I’ve read the whole series and so many more RJ Scott books I don’t have room to mention here.
Remove this series from your TBR list immediately.
Unless you don’t like suspense, danger and, dare I say, romance… But then, if you don’t love a good MM love story, you’re on the wrong website. What are you doing here if not to fall in love with beautiful men and be voyeurs into their lives? Really, what are you waiting for?

I have not ead the series however the cover from the first book “What Lies Beneatf” intrigues me. What does the pier, and the lake/ocean repreasent in the story? As an avid traveler to the South Carolinia/Georgia coastlines I am familiar with piers such as this one represents and love the experiences and stories around them.
Regards, Bill

I have read the series through and book 1 twice! I can honestly say this is my favorite series that you’ve written. You were meticulously in developing each character even when I didn’t realize what you were revealing was so important later on. Sawyer and Chris are living less than to the fullest, and my heart aches for that soul sucking emptiness they were struggling with. Add on the heartbreaking mystery, and the story unfolds within the three books like an ancient maze mastered by our dear writer, RJ. Phenomenal, gut-wrenching and obsessive storytelling at its best!
Deb Pelletier says
Nice book covers, thannk you.
Dana says
Love 💕 the covers, but even though it is written by you I will have to leave it on my tbr for now. I’m more into the fluffy happy stuff right now, who can’t use some happy in their lives, my tastes change all the time though so there’s no telling what I’ll be into next week or next month.
