Publisher's summary

Leo Byrne is a cop, Jason Banks is an ex-con. Even after one stolen kiss, something has to give before Leo can convince Jason that falling in love is even an option.

Adopted at a young age, Leo is part of the sprawling Byrnes family. With his dog Cap, three siblings and a whole mess of nieces and nephews, he is never lonely, and his life is full. Love is the last item on his to-do list, but seeing his best friends Sean and Eric happy and making new families makes him want things he doesn’t think is possible. Kissing Jason at an event to honor his bravery was one thing, but anything other than that is off limits. Until Jason has no one left to turn to, and it’s Leo who helps him at his lowest. Taking Jason and his daughter into his home is one thing, but falling for the ex-con is something else altogether.

Jason made a deal to keep his daughter safe and spent years behind bars as a result. Volunteering as a convict firefighter was as much about helping the community as saving his sanity, but now that he’s out, he doesn’t even have that. He’s lost his future, his self-respect, and has no friends or a place to call home. Worst of all, even after rescuing his daughter he still can’t keep her safe from the man who wants to use her as a bargaining chip for money. Meeting Leo might give Jason a way to keep Daisy safe, but falling for the stubborn cop means the truth has to be revealed, and he could lose everything all over again.

A great part 3 to the series.

Very satisfying to know what happened to the convict team firefighter from book 2. Jason’s story is a tough one, and I love that his devotion as a dad takes center stage. Now, I need to go find book 4 of the single dad series.

enjoyed it - solid 4 stars

📖 Story comment: Heart warming story, good pace, likeable characters, nice flow.
Good book for a lazy Sunday. This story is a little more "intense" than the other two. I enjoyed Leo's character (the dedicated Cop with the heart of gold), trusting his instincts and not taking Jason's "unexpected arrival" to the authorities. I'm glad we get more of Jason, he's all about doing what's right for Daisy and I liked watching him gradually give in to his heart and let Leo in.

🎧 Narrator comment: Sean Crisden is among my favorite narrators. His rhythm, changes in pitch and intonation, the cadence of voice in narration all work to bring the story to life. Each character had his own voice and I felt their emotions to be completely immersed in their story.

Another Winner!!

A delicious third entry in this sweet series! I echo numerous reviewers who affirmed, "there's NOTHING SEXIER than tenderhearted men showing their love & vulnerability for the care of kids!" Amen to that.

Book three is Leo's turn to shine as the beautiful, caring hot cop we already knew him 2B! His involvement with Jason, carefully begun, with some previous history, was built up cautiously. Add in the sweet, precocious Daisy, and "Cap," the wonder dog, and it's a great story in the making.

So delicious to watch the relationship of the MCs rise from the murky depths of messy history, which had yet to be discovered and resolved. Sean Crisden's sexy, deep rumbling voice brought it all to life beautifully!! Nice to touch base with past characters, too, which only added greater depth to the overall experience!

Here's hoping there's more to come!!

Must Read and Great Series Entry

Original Audiobook Review June 2020:
First, I just want to paraphrase what I said about Leo and Jason in my ebook review: they are perfect for each other. The journey isn't always easy but then sometimes the best rewards in life come from the hardest trials and obstacles. Beyond that I don't really think there is anything I can add to my original review that would convey how much I love RJ Scott's Promise and the whole Single Dads series.

As to the narration? Well it's Sean Crisden so there is no surprise how perfectly he brings life to RJ Scott's work. He does such an amazing job with her stories that when I read them, I can hear his voice in my head. Between her storytelling and his narration, Promise is even better the second time around.

One last thing: I didn't mention it in my original review but if you are wondering about series reading order, each entry is a standalone as it's a different pairing but I highly recommend reading them in publishing order as friendships evolve and previous(and future) MCs play a secondary part in each story. Will you be lost if you start with Promise? Not at all, but personally I feel said friendships and appearances make everything flow better read in order.

Original ebook Review December 2019:
First off, I've said it before and I'll say it again: men who care for children are some are the sexiest around and tick all my boxes. We first met Leo back in Single and we were introduced to Jason in Today, well now it's Promise and we get to experience their journey. Cop and ex-con, cliche it may sound but that doesn't mean it can't be magical when written well and RJ Scott definitely tells their story well.

I won't say too much about Leo, he's the kind of cop we all hope to meet if we are unfortunate enough to need a cop: he's kindhearted but not a pushover and though he's all about doing his job he's not so set in stone that he won't listen. Yes, he's on injured leave during the story but we've seen this side of him throughout the series so even on leave we know this about him.

Jason, well what can one say about Jason? Not everything is as it seems. I know that sounds cryptic but there are certain elements of his story that I don't want to spoil, that you really do need to learn for yourself. Watching him care for little Daisy(who BTW is the most adorable little girl) is wonderfully written and says so much about his character. Yes, there are things that he's trying desperately to protect her from and when all is revealed you completely understand his behavior and choices.

I loved watching Leo and Sean balance their duty and their gut when it came to trusting Jason and doing what's best for him and Daisy. This was another excellent example of why Leo is the cop I described above. There is just so much heart in this story(in the Single Dads series as whole really) that at times it may seem cliche but just because something is cliche doesn't mean it isn't entertaining. Promise is a gem of read that will make you smile, cry, laugh, and smile some more and I look forward to re-visiting for years to come.

Another great story in the Single Dads series!

From the moment Jason was introduced in Today, I already knew I wanted to know his story, and pairing him with Leo made this even more of a must-read. After all, it’s cop plus ex-con, so there’s that built-in interest to see how that would work. Well, with Jason and Leo it worked really well—complete with the requisite sweet moments thanks to Jason’s daughter Daisy.

That’s not to say there wasn’t any drama. Jason’s situation is far from stable, and there are tense moments that keep a level of angst present through most of the story. The close proximity, obvious attraction, and intense circumstances all contribute to a bit of an edge as you read. Even when Daisy is involved, that doesn’t necessarily mean sweet and cute—there are still serious things going on to which even she is not immune.

Even given the attraction constantly simmering between the two men, things between them progress at a normal pace within the story. If you’re expecting a lot of steamy page time, well that’s not what their tale is about. This is more centered on the bond they form, and how Jason realizes it as it happens.

I will admit though that after the dramatic climax of the story, the quick jump to the epilogue was just a bit off for me. While I did enjoy the wrap-up the epilogue provided with it’s look down the road time-wise for Leo and Jason, I would have rather had the events after that climax addressed as part of the main story. Putting them as a look-back in the epilogue felt like too much like the author wanted to rush to the finish.

Even so, Promise was still a strong 4-star read for me, and really fits well into this series. Now that our core three guys have their happy endings, I’m looking forward to moving on to other characters in this world since the series so far has been very satisfying. Though there was not as much steam in this story, Promise is still meant for readers 18+ for adult language, some sexual content, and adult topics.

The narration: Sean Crisden once again delivers a solid performance with his narration of Promise. You can easily tell the difference between the main characters, and his inflections and timing help accentuate the emotion of each scene. 5 stars for the narration!

Wonderful story, great narration.

Sean Crisden did his usual great job with his performance of this book by RJ Scott that I loved so much when I first read it. I love listening to books that I've already read because the audio always seems to make the story come alive for me even more the second time around.

Below is what I wrote when I read the book back in November 2019.

I have loved each book in this series but this one really tore me apart before it put me back together again. Ever since I read Today, I've really wanted to know Jason's story. I've wanted to know Leo's, too but I just knew there would be something intriguing about Jason.

Promise is the third book in the Single Dads series. While you could read it as a standalone, I really think you should read books 1 and 2 to get the full enjoyment of all of the characters. Book 1 is about Ash and Sean, book 2 is about Eric and Brady and now, book 3 is about Leo and Jason. Sean, Eric and Leo are buddies who live together until they each find their love-match. Jason helps to save Eric's life in book 2.

The blurb gives you all the details of the story but it can't tell you the depth of Jason's feelings for his daughter, Daisy and, eventually, Leo. RJ's wonderful words on the page conjure up all the feels that this story deserves. Jason needs help, and he needs to learn to trust Leo, but it's hard. Leo knows that Jason isn't telling him everything but he's trying to be patient. His cop instincts warn him not to trust Jason but his heart tells him something else.

There isn't a lot of complicated plot in this story, or a lot of hot sexy time, but it isn't needed. What's important are the relationships between all of the characters and how they come together to help each other.

Another reason this story really resonated with me is the dedication. RJ Scott's dog, Jack, crossed over the rainbow bridge about a month before my beloved Buttons did. Cap, the dog in this and the other Single Dad books, is based on Jack. Just reading RJ's heartfelt dedication brings tears to my eyes. Cap gets lots of well-deserved mentions in Promise.

I'm looking forward to reading more books in this series.

A copy of this audiobook was provided to me but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.

Good story, excellent performance as always!

I read this first so I've included my ebook review below. Sean Crisden does a fantastic job performing this book as always!

While I think you could probably read this as a standalone, I personally would not like not knowing the history of the characters, so I recommend reading the series in order.

I really like Leo and Jason together and I like this book better than book two. I was sucked in and read this quickly. I didn’t want to put it down once I picked it up because I was interested in knowing Jason’s story.

I understand Leo’s history and the circumstances surrounding he and Jason being thrown together both after Eric’s injury and now, but I am not a fan of how quickly their feelings escalated. And just like with book two there is a lot of off page sharing of information that feels ‘recapped’ for us which is how Jason learned of Leo’s history. Those two issues are what knocked this story from 5 to 4 stars for me.

Sean is in this book more than the other guys which I will never complain about as he is my favorite so far!

At the end of the book we learn Adam’s story is next which I am very interested in so I’ll be back for more!

Love this Series

I have come to love and feel connected to all the charters, specially Shawn, Eric, and Leo (can't forget Cap' either.) I sure hope that more stories in this series come our way.
